Past events – 2001

A generous grant from the Thembisa Trust has made it possible for the Foundation to employ staff to keep the gallery open on a daily basis throughout the year 2001.

The money was donated to the Foundation in memory of one of Thembisa’s founder members, Mrs Margaret Beynon who died late last year.

A lively workshop was held in the Centre over December 2000 and January 2001. The focus was on developing drawing skills and the students produced a great deal of high quality work culminating in a display in the gallery.

A hundred and fifty people attended the opening of an exhibition held at the centre in January 2001. A surprise bonus to the occasion was that our Queen of the Night cacti, (that flower for one day only each year), graced the Centre’s boundary wall.

A further grant from Community Heart and support from private sponsors made it possible to begin construction work on the open-air theatre. The theatre will be officially opened with a reading by Athol Fugard in December 2002.

During the next six months the sculpture studio will be opening with classes in portraiture. It is hoped that the painter and sculptor Jacobus Kloppers will be teaching this course.

Curators

We were delighted to welcome Liena Johnson and her son Ashley Horn as curators of the gallery, now open to the public from 9 – 5 Monday to Sunday. Liena was one of the first students at the Centre, and Ashley, also an early student, attracted many young people to attend workshops. Both are also talented artists.
