Education

For most people in Nieu Bethesda, education and hopes for an exciting future grind to a halt when funds run out for secondary school or higher education. Access to learning materials is difficult, and literacy levels are low.

To address these problems the Arts Centre has established a library and resource room and runs a multi-faceted adult education programme. The programme offers training and workshops in computer skills, office administration, entrepreneurship, English language and creative writing.

The Centre also runs a family literacy project, and supports adults wishing to embark on higher education distance courses or school leaving qualifications.

Nutrition is a persistent difficulty in Nieu Bethesda. The Centre offers guidance on nutrition and grows its own vegetables, which participants prepare into a nourishing daily meal.

This year I am going to do some more studying at the Centre, and hope to get some qualifications. I have learned to use the computer in the Centre library, and I am going to do my matric exams.

The Arts Centre gives us so many opportunities to discover our potential. I’m training to be a manager at the Arts Centre in 2005. I’m very excited about the chance to use my brain and have a diploma at the end of three years.

I was at High School then I exactly found out that I can’t read. Then I was so afraid to tell anybody about it, even my parents, and just kept quiet about it. There was a lady at the Arts Centre, Orla, who said there’s no such thing as not being able to read. I must just believe in myself. Then she found someone to help me. That person helped me reading, and I found out that I can read a little bit. She gave me some books to read and I read some.
