Who we are

The Bethesda Foundation is a non-profit organisation set up to support the Arts Centre by founder and director Jeni Couzyn.

It is registered both in the UK (Charity no:1089122) and in South Africa (NPO 40 – 915).

Mission statement of the Bethesda Foundation

The relief of poverty, protection of health, and advancement of education, by the provision of an Arts Centre and other facilities in Nieu Bethesda and surrounding areas of the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Mission statement of the Bethesda Arts Centre

The Centre is concerned with capacity building. Everyone has the potential talent to be creative and to learn more. Building on the traditional artistic talent of the San, and teaching a wide range of disciplines, we offer the opportunity to discover and develop these talents, to explore the richness of the self, and to grow in self respect. Through the sale of art work at the Centre and in the wider markets of South Africa and the UK, members of the previously disadvantaged community become financially independant. Through access to further education offered at the Centre they also widen their opportunities.
