Maria Tamana

I was born in Nieu Bethesda in 1965. I grew up here and went to school here. I learned to Standard 5 and then I left school because my parents had no money for me to study further. I stayed at home after that, and helped my mother with the housework for four years. Then I decided to go to Cape Town to look for work. I worked there for three years doing housework - I enjoyed it and they treated me as their own child. I left the job because I was pregnant and stayed at home for a year, looking after my baby. Then I went back to Cape Town for work, and went on like that till I had three children.

Last year I decided to marry, and now I have my own home, with my husband and my three children, as well as my brother's child. My mother is no longer alive. She died in 1991, after a stomach ache that lasted three days. I am happy at the Arts Centre, where I am learning so much I didn't know before. Now I am used to the people here, and I love sewing very much. I've made many things - and now I am busy with a skirt. My skirt is beautiful, with flowers, and I like the colours. I have decided to stay here, and go on with this work.
