I
was born in fruit country. I am twenty-nine. I lived with
my mother, three sisters and one brother. Our school didn't
go further than Standard seven, and there was no money to
send me to boarding school., I loved school and was very
sad to leave. When I left school at 16 I went to work on
a farm, packing apples. When I was 18 I went to Cape Town,
looking for better work. I worked at a clothing factory
there for seven years. Then I met my husband, James at a
disco. The factory where we were both working closed down,
so we decided to come to his parent's home in Nieu Behtesda.
I
love to work at the Centre because I can do what I want
to do. I love bright colours, and I love flowers. I like
our teacher because she teaches me things I do not know.
In the factory you just cut patterns out and sit on a machine.
Here I am learning to use my own ideas, cut my own things
and work with my own. I would love to study further, and
hope to do distance learning from the Centre library.
