Delia Swartz

I was born in Nieu Bethesda. I'm thirty-six this year. I was born in the clinic which is now the sculpture studio at the Centre. I had a good childhood, there was always enough food. My father was paid on Saturdays, and then we bought vegetables for Sunday. Now at the Centre we eat vegetables every day. I am married with five children. I was seventeen when I went to Cape Town for work - housework. There was no money for high-school. None of us went, but I would have liked to go. None of my friends went either. I worked in Cape Town until I was 22. I was at a dance, and I met my husband there. My husband works in Cape Town and I stay here in Nieu Bethesda. I returned when my mother died five years ago.

The only thing I don't like in Nieu Bethesda is the drinking. I'm not a drinker, and it's a bad influence on my children. If I could I would stop the people from drinking. Christalene told me about the Arts Centre. I love to be working here. I love the sewing by hand. The people are all so nice. I'm making a skirt now - with sweets on it.
